What changed
ChatGPT's ads are moving from simple sponsored placements toward richer formats and more measurement hooks.
Why it matters
A new ad channel is already attracting automated clicks, so advertisers need their own invalid-traffic checks from the start.

OpenAI is adding visual ad formats to ChatGPT, expanding conversion measurement and bringing more third-party measurement companies into its ad ecosystem, MarTech reported on October 6, 2026.

What was announced

  • Visual ads appear during image generation and can show products, how they are used, or experiences tied to a service. OpenAI says they stay separate from the generated image and do not influence ChatGPT’s answers.
  • Testing starts in the US with a group of advertisers later in October.
  • OpenAI says ChatGPT reaches 1.2 billion people weekly.
  • Hightouch, Tealium and LiveRamp can send conversion data to ChatGPT Ads.

The invalid-click findings

TrafficGuard analysed three weeks of ChatGPT ad traffic from 47 advertisers. Invalid-click rates ranged from 0.1% to 34%. Fifteen servers at one hosting provider clicked ads from five advertisers 318 times, and four hosting and proxy networks reached 25 of the 47 advertisers and produced half of the invalid clicks identified. TrafficGuard says ChatGPT ad clicks were 3.6 times more likely than Google Ads clicks to come from datacenters or proxy networks. Its CEO said “automated traffic has already found it”.

Our read

TrafficGuard sells protection against this problem, and 47 advertisers over three weeks is a small sample. Even so, early channels attract bots. Get click-level reporting and run your own checks before raising budgets.
