What to watch
Widening beyond the pilot, measurement terms and OpenAI's own self-serve roll-out.

On September 11, 2026, Amazon announced an initiative that lets select US brands buy ChatGPT ad inventory through the Amazon Demand-Side Platform, according to Channel Insider.

How the pilot works

  • It is invitation-only and a managed service.
  • Brands can run text and image promotions beneath organic ChatGPT answers, priced on cost-per-click or cost-per-thousand-impression bases.
  • Amazon sets up and manages campaigns and budgets. OpenAI’s ad platform decides when and where ads appear, using contextual matching.
  • Delta Vacations is among the initial testers. Its president, Katrin Koenig, is quoted on how travel planning is becoming more personalized.

Chris Conetta, Amazon DSP’s director of omnichannel supply, is quoted: “Conversational ads represent the fastest growing engagement opportunity for brands.”

Our read

Retail media networks and AI assistants have separate audiences and data. Putting ChatGPT inventory inside Amazon’s DSP gives buyers one place to plan both, and gives OpenAI more demand without building more sales teams. The questions are practical: what reporting is offered, how brand safety is handled in generated answers, and what data moves between Amazon and OpenAI. Because it is a limited pilot, most advertisers will only watch for now.
