OpenAI’s advertising in ChatGPT started as an invited pilot in February 2026 and has since opened further. According to Marketing Dive’s May 11, 2026 report, a beta self-serve Ads Manager is available to US businesses. This article summarizes that report; we could not read OpenAI’s own announcement when we researched it, so statements about OpenAI’s advertising principles are left out.

Who has used it

The pilot began in February 2026 with brands that included Target, Albertsons and Williams-Sonoma.

How it works

  • Buying: advertisers can buy on a CPM (per thousand impressions) basis and on a CPC (per click) basis.
  • Measurement: a Conversions API and a pixel let advertisers connect results to ads.
  • Partners: agency and technology partners named include Dentsu, Omnicom, Publicis, WPP, Adobe, Criteo, Kargo, Pacvue and StackAdapt.
  • Markets: expansion is planned to the UK, Mexico, Japan, Brazil and South Korea.

Marketing Dive also reports that OpenAI projects about $2.5 billion in advertising revenue this year. That is a reported projection, not a result.

Our read

A pixel and a Conversions API matter more than the headline: they mean the channel is built to be measured like other performance channels, which is what lets budgets move. They also mean marketers have a privacy decision to make, because passing conversion data to a new platform needs a clear legal basis and accurate consent records (see our piece on EU cookie-consent proposals).

A cautious approach is a small, time-boxed test with a clear conversion event, compared with the same budget on an existing channel. Treat early results as a snapshot, since the product is in beta. For brands with many locations, see also Yext’s plan to buy Flamel.ai, which already runs local campaigns on ChatGPT.
