On September 28, 2026, Shopify announced that it had extended WebMCP (Web Model Context Protocol) support to checkout, including Shop Pay, so that browser-based AI agents can work with a checkout open in a shopper’s own browser.
What agents can do
- Read the checkout: its state, messages and the order details after completion.
- Update supported fields, such as an address or delivery option.
- Submit the order, but only after the buyer confirms.
TechCrunch notes that this uses Shopify’s Universal Commerce Protocol, giving agents structured access instead of relying on screenshots. Gil Greenberg, staff product manager for agentic commerce at Shopify, is quoted: “Shopping with an agent shouldn’t feel like watching paint dry.”
What is not covered
According to summaries of the announcement, agents cannot change line items or enter new card details, so payment runs through a saved Shop Pay card or existing Shop Pay approval. Some checkout types, including B2B, embedded checkout, mobile SDKs, draft orders and order edits, get no tools, and WebMCP works only in Chromium browsers for now. The tools work on eligible checkouts without merchant setup.
Our read
Shopify’s choice is to make agents welcome and keep the human decision in place. That contrasts with retailers that block agents altogether. For merchants the effect is immediate and needs no work, which is the reason to check your analytics, attribution and fraud rules now: some orders will start with an agent filling in the page. For shoppers the rule is simple. An agent can prepare the checkout, and you still press confirm.
