Developing
Shopify calls it early-stage: Canvas is not replacing the existing editor yet.

In 60 seconds
- On October 1, 2026 Shopify introduced Canvas, a design surface for building a store with its Sidekick AI agent.
- The whole store opens in one workspace; merchants edit directly or chat with Sidekick, which writes code and checks its changes against screenshots.
- Themes edited in Canvas no longer receive automatic updates and cannot be downloaded; third-party themes are not supported.
- It is desktop-only, rolling out over days, and lacks theme translations, multi-market customization and app block configuration.
Impact Layer
- What changed
- Shopify is making an AI agent the main author of store design, not just a helper inside the editor.
- Why it matters
- It lowers the cost of a custom store, and it also locks a theme out of the update path, which matters for maintenance and upgrades.
- Who is affected
- Shopify merchants, theme developers and agencies that build stores.

- Stack impact
- Try Canvas on a development store first, and treat any theme edited there as a fork you now maintain.
- Business impact
- Moderate Details come from a trade report of Shopify's announcement; Shopify says it is early-stage and has remaining gaps.

Shopify introduced Canvas on October 1, 2026, according to Unite.AI, rolling it out to merchants over the following days. Canvas is a design surface for building a store with Sidekick, Shopify’s AI agent.
How it works
- A merchant sees all store pages at once in a shared workspace, pans across layouts and zooms into details.
- Edits can be made directly or by chatting with Sidekick, which writes code and checks its changes against screenshots. A Shopify design director says the agent was guided toward sound design with theme libraries and evaluation data.
Shopify’s Ben Sehl: “When I built Kotn 12 years ago, I knew how to code and it still took two weeks to get a rough store working.” He says merchants can now build fully custom stores in twenty minutes.
Limits
- Themes edited in Canvas no longer receive automatic updates and cannot be downloaded.
- Merchants cannot add blocks manually; Sidekick must. Third-party themes are not supported.
- Desktop only. It requires plans with theme customization and edit-code permissions for staff.
- Not available: theme translations, multi-market customization and app block configuration.
Shopify says Canvas “is not replacing the existing editor yet.”
Our read
A design tool that anyone can use is a real gain for small merchants. The cost is ownership: a theme edited in Canvas becomes a one-off fork, without updates or a download, so you carry its upkeep. Agencies should note that business-critical features such as translations and multi-market pricing are not yet supported.
