What changed
A large consumer AI assistant gained a built-in way to complete purchases at millions of Shopify merchants.
Why it matters
It makes a social and messaging platform a place where shopping starts and ends, so merchants may be reached by an agent rather than a search or an ad.

On September 22, 2026, Shopify and Meta announced a partnership to bring Shop Pay checkout to Muse, Meta’s AI assistant, according to PYMNTS.

What was announced

  • People talk to Muse in its app or in WhatsApp to find products, and can finish the purchase with one tap through Shop Pay.
  • Shopify CEO Tobias Lütke is quoted as saying the partnership aims to “enable agentic checkout with Shop Pay on all Shopify stores.” Meta’s chief AI officer Alexandr Wang is quoted on giving people access to a wide range of stores.
  • Shopify says Shop Pay exceeded $400 billion in lifetime accelerated gross merchandise volume by June 2026, and that agentic commerce drives an 80% conversion uplift when searches start through AI. Both are Shopify’s own figures.

The coverage also reports that Amazon had barred Muse from its store, which we describe in a separate article.

Our read

For a merchant this adds a channel where a person never sees the store’s own pages: the agent presents products, and the checkout is handled by Shop Pay. That puts weight on product data, on fulfilment promises and on the way you measure orders that arrive through an assistant. It also shows a split forming in agentic shopping between platforms that open checkout to agents and retailers that do not.
