Google Merchant Center page now says products with low-quality images will continue to show in ads and free listings

Developing

Google gave no blog post or changelog entry, and the page is undated, so the edit date is unknown.

In 60 seconds

  • The old page warned a product "may be prevented from showing in ads and free listings until the image quality improves".
  • The new page says: "Your product will continue to show in ads and free listings", and frames image quality as a performance factor.
  • The 500 x 500 pixel minimum still applies, with enforcement starting January 31, 2027.
  • Free listings were removed across the EEA on September 17-18, 2026, so the reassurance matters less there.

Impact Layer

What changed
Low image quality is now described as a performance issue and not a reason for disapproval.
Why it matters
Weak images may still cost clicks even if products show, so feed quality remains a conversion lever.
Who is affected
E-commerce merchants and shopping-feed managers.

Keep fixing flagged images, but note that an undersized image can still be disapproved once the January 31, 2027 rule applies.

What to watch
A Google explanation and any change to the size rule.

Search Engine Roundtable’s Barry Schwartz reported on October 12, 2026 that Google edited its Merchant Center Help page “How to fix: Low image quality [image_link]”. Hana Kobzova of PPC News Feed first spotted it, and PPC Land covered it on October 13.

What changed

  • The old page said a product “may be prevented from showing in ads and free listings until the image quality improves”.
  • The new page says: “Note: Your product will continue to show in ads and free listings.”
  • It now frames quality as a performance factor: “High image quality correlates strongly with user engagement and clicks.”

What did not change

The 500 x 500 pixel minimum still applies, with enforcement starting January 31, 2027, and the remediation steps are unchanged. An image can pass the size floor and still be flagged for quality, while an undersized image faces disapproval regardless of sharpness.

Not stated

Why Google revised the page, when the edit was made, whether image quality affects ad rank or free listing selection, how blurriness is measured and how many listings carry the flag. Free listings were removed across the EEA on September 17-18, 2026.

Our read

Do not read this as “images no longer matter”. The page itself says they correlate with clicks.
