Mailchimp was established in 2001 by Ben Chestnut and Mark Armstrong, with Dan Kurzius joining later. It is based in Atlanta, Georgia and is described as a marketing automation and email marketing platform that has grown to include landing pages, lead tracking and ad retargeting.

A bootstrapped company

According to Wikipedia, the founders never took outside investment. After the company added a free tier in 2009, its user numbers grew from 85,000 to 450,000 within a year.

Intuit

Intuit announced on September 13, 2021 that it would acquire Mailchimp for about $12 billion in roughly equal parts cash and stock, and completed the purchase on November 1, 2021. At the announcement, Intuit said Mailchimp had about 13 million users, 2.4 million monthly active users and 800,000 paid customers. The platform is now sold as Intuit Mailchimp, and Intuit lists it with QuickBooks, TurboTax and Credit Karma among its products.
