A Semrush blog post of August 26, 2026, using data from the AI visibility tracker Promptwatch, reports a sharp fall in how often ChatGPT cites Reddit.
The numbers
- Reddit held a steady 3.8% share of ChatGPT citations from July 18 to August 7, one of the largest shares for a single domain.
- From August 14 to 17 its share averaged 0.5%, an 86% decline from the prior period.
- On August 8 Promptwatch recorded a change in how ChatGPT Search fans out queries. Reddit’s share began sliding then, but the steep fall came on August 14, which the post calls unexplained.
Responses and caveats
OpenAI told Yahoo Tech it does not set a fixed level of visibility for individual sites and that ChatGPT still cites Reddit. Promptwatch calls the size of the drop provisional and says it cannot rule out a problem in its own data collection; Semrush says it is too early to treat 0.5% as the new normal. Reddit’s share also fell in Google’s AI Overviews (11%) and AI Mode (31%), per Axios, so the decline is concentrated in ChatGPT.
Precedent
Semrush’s study of more than 230,000 prompts found ChatGPT’s Reddit citations fell from about 60% of responses in early August 2025 to roughly 10% by mid-September 2025. Kevin Indig attributed that drop to Google removing its num=100 search parameter, not to OpenAI.
Our read
Treat any single-site share as unstable. Track your own citations by platform over time, and do not stake an AI visibility plan on one source.
