2019

Acquisition

Salesforce completes its $15.7 billion Tableau acquisition

Salesforce closed its $15.7 billion acquisition of the analytics company Tableau, announced in June 2019. Tableau continued under its own brand.

Why it matters

It put analytics and data visualization inside the CRM company's portfolio and signaled that customer data and the tools to read it were becoming one purchase. For marketers, it was an early example of the data layer, not just the campaign layer, being consolidated into a suite.

2018

Acquisition

Adobe agrees to acquire Marketo for $4.75 billion

Adobe announced a definitive agreement to acquire Marketo for $4.75 billion. It completed the acquisition on October 31, 2018.

Why it matters

It gave Adobe a leading B2B marketing automation product to sit beside its content and analytics tools, and it made marketing automation a battleground between the large suites. Marketo co-founder Jon Miller returned to the category in 2026 with Phave (see the Phave entry).

Regulatory change

The EU General Data Protection Regulation starts to apply

The GDPR, adopted in 2016, applied from May 25, 2018 to companies and public bodies in the EU single market, including marketers who process personal data.

Why it matters

It set the baseline that most martech vendors still design to: lawful grounds for processing, records of consent and the ability to delete data. Many consent-management and customer-data products exist because of it.

Significance Transformative

Acquisition

Adobe agrees to acquire Magento Commerce for $1.68 billion

Adobe announced a definitive agreement to acquire the commerce platform Magento Commerce for $1.68 billion, to put commerce inside its Experience Cloud.

Why it matters

It was an early sign that the large experience suites wanted to own the point of sale as well as the content and the campaign. Marketing and commerce data in one vendor is also the idea behind many later suite deals.

Significance High

2013

Acquisition

Salesforce agrees to acquire ExactTarget for about $2.5 billion

Salesforce announced a definitive agreement to acquire the email and marketing platform ExactTarget in a transaction valued at about $2.5 billion, at $33.75 per share in cash.

Why it matters

It moved Salesforce beyond sales and service into marketing, and set a pattern that has repeated for a decade: large CRM and experience vendors buying their way into marketing software rather than building it.
