On August 1, 2019, Salesforce completed its acquisition of Tableau Software, the data visualization and analytics company, in an all-stock deal valued at $15.7 billion. The deal had been announced in June 2019 and closed in less than two months, well ahead of the late-October completion that had been expected.
The terms
- Tableau shareholders received 1.103 Salesforce shares for each Tableau share, which valued the offer at $177.88 per share when it was announced.
- At the time it was the biggest acquisition in Salesforce’s history.
After the close
Tableau stayed based in Seattle and continued to operate under its own brand, led by its chief executive, Adam Selipsky.
Why it matters
It put analytics and data visualization inside the CRM company's portfolio and signaled that customer data and the tools to read it were becoming one purchase. For marketers, it was an early example of the data layer, not just the campaign layer, being consolidated into a suite.
What happened next
Tableau continued as a separately branded business inside Salesforce after closing.
