What to watch
Gartner's later surveys on seller productivity with agents.

Gartner issued a prediction on July 28, 2026 about sales organizations and AI agents. We read search summaries of its press release, not the page itself.

The prediction

  • By 2028, AI agents will outnumber sellers 10 to 1.
  • Fewer than 40% of sellers will say agents improved their productivity.
  • Without the right data foundation, workflow integration and seller experience, chief sales officers risk “agent sprawl”: more digital activity, but little improvement in seller impact.
  • “AI agents should not be viewed as a shortcut to sales productivity.” If systems are fragmented, agents scale the fragmentation.
  • CSOs who overhaul data, automation and user experience are five times more likely to gain ROI than those who choose quick fixes.

Our read

This is a forecast from an analyst firm, and the numbers are projections. The advice is sensible and unglamorous: before adding agents, check that records are clean, that each workflow has one owner, and that sellers can see what an agent did. A simple test is to ask what an agent would change in a process you already know is messy. If the answer is “nothing helpful,” fix the process first.
