The IAB published “Data Clean Rooms in Commerce: Common Use Cases” on September 29, 2026. It is aimed at retailers, brands, agencies, publishers and technology partners.

What the public summary says

  • Data clean rooms are “increasingly important for privacy-enhanced collaboration across the commerce ecosystem, but they aren’t the right solution for every data or measurement need.”
  • It offers a framework of five questions to decide whether a clean room engagement is justified, as opposed to relying on existing capabilities.
  • Common use cases covered include audience overlap analysis, data enrichment, targeting and suppression, with more in the full document.

Our read

A guideline that begins with when not to use the technology is useful. Clean rooms were sold widely, and many projects only needed an overlap count or a suppression list that simpler partners can do. Before a project, write down what question you are answering, what data each side has, what the clean room allows that other methods do not, and what it costs. We read only the public summary and could not review the five questions themselves.
