- What to watch
- A mapping from old categories to themes, and brand safety accreditation for CTV and audio.
Google stopped offering sensitive categories and digital content labels as brand suitability controls for programmatic inventory in Display & Video 360 on October 1, 2026, according to PPC Land. The only exception named is “content not yet rated”.
What replaces them
- Inventory modes (3): Maximum, Moderate and Limited, set at advertiser level.
- Content themes (10): Content Suitable for Families; Games (fighting); Games (mature); Health (sensitive); Health (source undetermined, marked YouTube only); News (recent); News (sensitive); News (source not featured); Politics; Religion.
- These now apply to programmatic display, video, CTV and audio line items, the same controls that already govern YouTube.
- Advertisers can exempt selected deals from the settings, all or nothing. The exemption does not apply to YouTube, Auction Packages, Inventory Packages or Demand Gen.
Open questions
Google’s page gives no count of advertisers affected, no mapping from old categories to new themes and no migration tool. Alcohol, tobacco, gambling, weapons and drugs have no named theme, and the reference page does not say whether the tiers cover them. YouTube’s MRC accreditation for Shorts does not extend to CTV, open-web display or audio, and third-party brand safety targeting from IAS, DoubleVerify and Scope3 is not supported for audio.
Our read
Fewer, broader controls are simpler, but they give you less say over specific topics. Export your old exclusions, compare them with the ten themes and decide what you still need a verification partner for.
