On October 1, 2026, Shopify introduced Canvas, a design surface where merchants build and customize their online store with Sidekick, Shopify’s AI agent. It was rolling out to merchants over the following days.
How it works
- Canvas lays out every store page together, so a merchant can pan across the store and zoom into details.
- Merchants can click an element to edit it directly or ask Sidekick in chat. Sidekick’s changes appear in Canvas in real time.
- Previews render the store’s actual code, with full interactivity and animation, across products, collections and screen sizes.
- Sidekick edits theme code directly, checks its code and reviews screenshots to refine its work, and remembers a merchant’s preferences and earlier design decisions.
What Shopify says about its limits
Ben Sehl, Shopify’s director of product and a co-founder of Kotn, said: “We’re early here and Canvas is not replacing the existing editor yet.” Shopify’s post says there are gaps still to close. It did not list unsupported features, eligible plans or regional availability.
Why it matters
A design tool that anyone can use is a real gain for small merchants. The cost to weigh is ownership: independent coverage reports that themes edited in Canvas stop receiving automatic updates, which we could not confirm from Shopify's own post. Agencies should check whether translations, multi-market settings and app blocks are supported before moving a live store.
What happened next
Shopify said Canvas would not replace the existing editor yet and did not give a date for closing the gaps it mentioned. Check Shopify's help center for current limits.
