The Optimizely study is vendor-commissioned; budget benchmarks come from the author's earlier article and the 12-versus-40 campaign example is illustrative.

In 60 seconds
- Gartner 2026 CMO Spend Survey (401 leaders): labour's share of marketing budgets rose from 21.9% to 24.5%; 38% named a lack of internal AI expertise as the top barrier.
- Optimizely-commissioned Savanta study (2,003 leaders): 76% spend at least three hours weekly correcting AI output and 54% say leadership underestimates it.
- Another Gartner survey: 56% of CMOs lack the budget for their 2026 strategy.
- Advice: diagnose the gap, then fix skills first; budget training at 15% to 20% of annual licence cost and one operations role per three to four core platforms.

Gene De Libero, principal at Digital Mindshare, argues in a MarTech column published October 16, 2026 that AI or extra headcount will not fix a marketing skills gap.
The data cited
- Gartner 2026 CMO Spend Survey (401 marketing leaders): labour’s share of marketing budgets rose from 21.9% (2025) to 24.5% (2026); 38% named a lack of internal AI expertise and talent as the top barrier to AI-driven efficiency.
- Optimizely-commissioned study by Savanta (2,003 marketing leaders): 76% spend at least three hours weekly editing or correcting AI output; 54% say leadership underestimates that effort; 39% are too busy managing workflows to think strategically; 46% worry AI will erode junior marketers’ skill development.
- Separate Gartner survey: 56% of CMOs lack the budget for their 2026 strategy.
The advice
AI amplifies whichever gap a team has. Diagnose the gap by checking what reviewers correct, where work waits and by testing a month without a recurring project. If short on both, fix skills first, with training at 15% to 20% of annual licence cost (a $100,000 licence implies $15,000 to $20,000) and one process or operations role per three to four core platforms.
Caveats
The 12-versus-40 campaign example is illustrative, and the budget benchmarks come from the author’s earlier article. Skills-first training takes months. The Optimizely study comes from a vendor.
